Lumen Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 15, 2026
Lumen is a privacy-first AI assistant for iPhone and iPad. This policy describes what data Lumen collects, what it doesn't, and what happens when you enable optional cloud providers. Plain English, no surprises.
Short version
- Lumen does not operate a backend, analytics pipeline, crash reporter, or ad network.
- Your conversations, memories, and preferences live on your device, stored using standard iOS app storage.
- Lumen does not track you, does not share data with advertisers, and does not sell data.
- Apple Intelligence, when available, runs on your device. Your prompts and replies do not leave your device on that path.
- Ollama Local, if you enable it, sends your messages to an Ollama server that you operate on your own network. The Lumen developer does not see or proxy that traffic.
- Ollama Cloud, if you enable it, sends your messages to
https://ollama.comusing an API key that you provide. The Lumen developer still does not see or proxy that traffic, but your messages do leave your device.
What Lumen stores on your device
Lumen uses standard iOS app storage and iCloud, where applicable, for the following:
- Conversation history (messages, attachments, timestamps, participants).
- Saved memories and pinned prompts.
- App settings and preferences, including your chosen AI provider and any server URLs or credentials you have entered.
- Imported document content you explicitly add to a conversation for context.
This data stays on your device. Lumen has no server-side mirror of any of it. You can delete any conversation, memory, or imported document from inside the app at any time. Uninstalling Lumen removes its on-device storage.
What Lumen does not collect
- No personal identifiers. Lumen does not create a developer-side account.
- No advertising identifiers or third-party ad SDKs.
- No crash reports or analytics sent to the developer or to any third party.
- No location, contacts, health data, financial data, or browsing history.
AI providers and what they see
Lumen ships with three possible AI providers. The first is on-device and the default reviewer path. The other two are optional and require you to configure them explicitly.
Apple Intelligence (default, on-device)
On supported devices, Lumen uses Apple's Foundation Models framework to run AI inference on the device itself. Your prompts and the model's replies do not leave your device on this path. Apple's own Apple Intelligence and Privacy documentation describes how Apple handles any limited cloud use that may occur when you opt into Private Cloud Compute.
Ollama Local (optional)
If you enable Ollama Local and enter a server URL in Settings, Lumen sends your chat messages and any attached content you include to the server at that URL. You operate that server. Typically it runs on a Mac or Linux machine on your own network. The Lumen developer does not operate that server, does not proxy requests through any intermediate service, and does not log the content of those requests.
Ollama Cloud (optional)
If you enable Ollama Cloud and enter an API key in Settings, Lumen
sends your chat messages and any attached content to
https://ollama.com, authenticated with the API key you
provided. The key is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device. The
Lumen developer does not operate ollama.com, does not
proxy requests through any intermediate service, and does not have
access to your API key or the content of your requests. Your use of
Ollama Cloud is governed by
Ollama's own privacy policy.
Permissions
- Microphone — requested only when you use voice input. Audio is processed by on-device speech recognition to produce a text transcript of what you said; the audio itself is not saved by Lumen and is not sent to any server by Lumen.
- Speech recognition — used in conjunction with the microphone permission above, for the same purpose.
Lumen may request additional permissions (camera, photo library, calendar, contacts) in a future release. Any additional permission Lumen requests will be accompanied by a plain-English purpose string shown by iOS when the permission is first requested, and will be described in an updated version of this document.
Children
Lumen is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Because Lumen does not operate a backend, there is no developer-side data to store or delete.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change, and a notice describing the change will appear in a future release of Lumen.
